Ok, I am going to have to furnish you with pictures of our fan. It’s so large that it tears paperwork, light articles of clothing, small animals etc. and draws them towards the gaping maw that is the monster attic fan.

Amusingly, the fan itself is powered by a switch which is set on the wall in the attic stairwell and appears to pose itself as a light switch. Hilarity ensues when the unwitting throw the switch and the fan comes alive with a humming roar, and the doors start to slam shut and various items blow past in the ensuing gale.

While I do appreciate the red-ness of your fan, ours being a drab faded aluminum paint popular in some distant past where giant fans and drab paint ruled the attics of the world in their sheetmetal grip, our fan measures just shy of a modest 50 (that’s fifty) inches tip to tip.

We have a big blue fan of death in our house. It’s not as big, but the same concept (open blades, motor, and belt). Ours is located in the attic but accessed through a 4′ X 4′ panel in the ceiling in the upstairs landing/hallway. You pull a rope in the linen closet and the panel opens into the attic revealing the vertically mounted fan. My husband loves it, I think that is one of the main reasons he wanted to buy the house. Before this, I’d never seen anything else like it.

We have an attic fan in my parent’s house. It’s the best thing in the world for creating a breeze on those warm summer nights. But of course ours was in a non accessible ( by children) attic behind louvers. You can feel it tugging on you when you walk underneath it….

This surprised me. I liked the picture you put on there saying that your coordless drill was “fearing for its life.” ha hahaha! and this fan could have helped with alot of childhood problems I had when I was younger. Not to say that I am not old. I am no where near full of my self for that matter. but if I had that for encouragement prehaps to clean my room. I would be afraid of that monsterous fan. LMAO! I guess that the timer mechanisim is the “power switch” for the fan. I haver never heard of anything like this. Also in those pictures the fan blades look really SHARP!!! – Bruce,

Agreed… this story is hilarious. I am currently remodeling my attic into a living space and have a 12 inch attic fan that tries to suck cool air into the attic from the second floor, no luck. I did consider getting one of those red monster fans (Caging it in? good idea!), but after reading this story, visions of my 3 year old daughter being whisked up the spiral staircase and diced has me looking for a safer alternative (which I sure there are many). Although, as a way of getting the kids to eat their vegetables still has my wife and I keeping it as a viable option.

Wow, when I saw this story about The Big Red Fan of Death, I about died laughing almost the whole time reading it. I have a horrible fear of fans like this, so it’s a good thing we don’t have any in our house (it would probably be very illegal where I live anyways). I would like to see more pictures of this horrible contraption. You should have someone take your picture next to it to better show the scale of it, or take a picture with more surrounding area because I’m a little confused as to how it works. I realize though this was posted a long time ago and you might not even have it anymore, or even check this site; just thought I’d say something though.
